Sometimes the kindest letters come when you least expect them. This one came from my adopted brother, Roger. I didn’t know he saw me the way he does… but he did. And he does.
His words aren’t just about my book—they’re about love, memory, redemption, and prayer that never stopped. Here’s what he shared:
Thank you for the invitation to read your book. I was touched and inspired by your redemptive story. God has helped you take lemons and turn them into lemonade.
Until I spoke with Paula recently, I had not thought about the tragedy of going through losing your natural parents due to circumstances of being unable to care for you. The deep heartache the child experiences and a loss that never is completely healed. I just knew you and the rest were part of our family and I never questioned it. Your story brought it all into focus for me. I had no idea how tough life has been for you.
The book is written with extreme generosity toward everyone. You are particularly positive about your relationships within our family. I was touched by your complimentary disposition toward Mom. She truly loved you as she did every child in her family. Surprisingly you were kind toward Dad, who I know caused you pain.
Your recounting many relationships you grew through over the course of your life proves how much we need one another. You had many angels help you through hard times. Your love for your daughters is touching.
I only wish I was more present to you as you battled. I had a special place in my heart for you. You were loving and supportive towards me throughout our time together. For that I am exceedingly grateful.
It took me a week to decide to buy the book and read it. I’m glad I did. It helped me appreciate more the challenges those I love and grew up with dealt with.
Believe it or not, I pray for you daily. I have for years. It is good to see you have overcome so many challenges since I last saw you in Mom’s apartment over 12 years ago.
You are an answer to prayer.
You are a miracle!
Go Rangers! Go Cowboys. KC is my second favorite football team. They started out as the Dallas Texans, you know.
🕊 Reflection:
I didn’t know how much my story would matter to him. I didn’t expect him to buy the book, let alone pray for me every day—for years. But he did.
To be called a miracle by someone who was there, who saw both the sweet and the sour… it humbles me. It honors me.
Roger, you are part of the redemption too.
